Nathaniel was a corporate drone for several years, enjoying a life of comfort.  Yet, he could not turn away from the suffering the Corps intentionally infliected upon Controllers, those women cursed to have intrinsic powers.   Nathaniel left the corporate world to start an Agency and a linked Academy.  These were insitutions were the Controllers could be registered, kept under tight control, and also allowed to live their lives as long as they didn’t break any of the charters of the Agency.  This resulted in an uneasy peace for a time.  Natahniel walked a fine line between accepting missions on Corporate behalf, frequenting targeting other Corporations, using the very Agents he trained.  The power structure works, though it could collapse at any moment.  The Corps get to test their new security against Agents, they can hire the Agency to hinder, but never destory, rival Corps, , and Controllers are kept on a short leash to ensure the Corps retain their power.   Nathaniel played his hand too aggressively when he realized how powerful Agent Starlight could become someday.  Her potential was cosmic, yet unlocking it required an extreme psychological response.  So Nathaniel arranged for Agent Starlight’s younger sister to be torted by Karma’s organization and possibly put her life into danger to unlock Agent Starlight’s cosmic abilities.  The gambit worked, until Agent Starlight found out Nathaniel’s trickery and banished him from his own Agency, and assuming control in his place.
